In addition to registering your site with the major search engines, it is important that it be listed in the large human-compiled internet directories. To get your site listed in a directory, you must find an appropriate directory category, write a brief but descriptive synopsis of your site and submit the URL. It can take several weeks before your page appears in the directory, if it is accepted.

Open Directory

The Open Directory was purchased by Netscape in November 1998. It uses volunteer editors to catalog directory  submissions. Lycos, AOL, AltaVista and HotBot use the directory listings from this internet directory service.
